'The last free beta version of Helix, by Audjoo, before the final commercial version, has surprising specifications: it is an hybrid synth that combines substractive synthesis and wave shaping. Limitations: only 32 Bit VST, only 128 Presets, no FX BUT full synthesis + Filter + ARP + 24mod matrix mono + poly.

The synth I think everyone should know about is D16 LuSH-101. It's a real beast of a synth and should definetely be more famous than it already is.

Yeah but the thing is that it starts off with just one parameter, one hidden sound, and you have to match it. Then two parameters, and several hidden sounds that you have to figure out how to make (very precisely btw) with just two parameters. Then 3, 4 params etc.
It's ear training, like you won't get any other way. And when you get things wrong by very little it gives you 4/5 stars and you start realising that one element that you missed, how it contributes to the sound. It's really worth every penny. The ear training you get from this software is laser-sharp accurate.

It's effects on sound are Y' then off you go to try and recreate a few samples using JUST that one knob, then listening to the slightest differences when the knob is at 0.1 from 0.3.
