Your replies and suggestions were very useful and much appreciated folks. I also found the following video on YouTube www.youtube.com/watch?v=NismC0pyTYY with the piece being played quite faithfully to the original, and in the comments section someone had transcribed it (in C#) and included a link to a downloadable PDF. Additionally, after sending an email to the www.frankmills.com website, his management wrote back informing me that a couple of years ago a book with two audio CDs 'Piano Fun' was released which contains the piece in both C and C#, and on the CDs there is the full piece, plus another track minus the piano part.

Finally, at this website www.midi.com.au/frank-mills I found for sale the piece (in C#) as MIDI and MP3 files, with and without the piano part. Being curious about how the piece came to be written in C#, I sent the following email: Hello from Manchester, England - 'Music Box Dancer' has been a favourite piece of music for many years, and I'm wondering why it was written in C# major (7 sharps), rather than the enharmonic key of Db major (5 flats)? As I don't believe it modulates to a different key during performance - or maybe it was composed in a different manner, without regard to key? By the way, really enjoyed my year in Canada in the mid-90s living in Mississauga, and working in Oakville as a video game computer programmer.

And got back the following very informative reply from Frank Mills: I wish you could attend one of my concerts where I explain in detail why MBD was written in C#. I shall try to make it short but it isn't easy! When my parents both died in my late teens, I went into a deep depression which took many years to diagnose as well as to heal. During those times I would play along to my record player. Rachmaninov was and still is my favorite composer. When I took the piano entry exam to McGill music school, my future composition teacher asked me to play something by ear.

I played some of Rachmaninov s #2. He asked me why I played it in C#. I said I thought that's what it was written in because that's the key it was played in on my record player. ( I hadn't seen the sheet music of it). He smiled and in his shy Hungarian accent said ' Ah, record player turned too fast ya?

By that time I was really good at playing in C# and it had become my go to key and that's how it happened. I wrote several songs in that key until my publisher of sheet music said to stop it because no one can play anything in C#! If you are a pianist play MBD in C and in C#. Perhaps it's because the black keys are elevated ( and there are more of them than white notes in that key) but you might agree it's easier in the latter. Why not send this out on the internet..you are not alone with your very astute observation and question. Thanks for your interest and I'm glad you enjoyed Canada.

I regret my only true understanding of Manchester is from the song ' Journey Cross the Mersey ' which I believe was about your fair city and I might be 'seeing sharp' about that too! Regards, Frank Mills. Von Kopf Bis Fuss Ebook Readers on this page.
