With screenshot programs such as today's GOTD it would be very helpful to say under what circumstances it will do a screenshot, eg playing a video windowed, playing a video full-screen, or playing a game full-screen. Other than those, PrtScr will do the job without installing another program and places the full-screen image on the clipboard.

Easy to paste and edit afterwards! In regard to programs that ask for a toolbar or search engine or home page change, provided there's a checkbox to untick this should not present any problems. #51 For those who need additional facilities over and above freeware screen capture, then today's GAOTD probably makes sense -- the auto capture, and the watermarking of captures, isn't common. I do screen captures almost every day, whether it's an online bank transaction, or shopping purchase, or even stuff like filing my gas and electricity meter readings on line. PrtSc is blatantly useless for that: I want to capture just part of the on-screen image, not the whole darned thing.

No doubt every GAOTD user will have her or his own favorite, but I've been using Wisdom Soft's Screenhunter for years. I open the app when starting a session (it's so light on resources, it can be left running anyway) and then use the hot key F6 to activate, at which point the mouse cursor turns into a frame grabber and you simply draw a rectangle as small or as big as you like. And, er, that's it. Image is saved to your chosen destination folder as a jpg or bitmap. I've no particular issue with today's GAOTD other than the fact that it's overly complicated for the kind of usage needs I have -- and the image quality of the capture simply isn't as good in terms of definition as that from the freeware Screenhunter.

Not a keeper for me, but thanks anyway, GAOTD. There are some tutorials on the web, but it's really not difficult to do. #37 - Dave: I'm afraid the vast majority of desktops do not have that function key (you must have an Apple or a laptop instead), but I find that the PrintScreen key on mine works just fine by itself, since all I have to do after that is start Paint and paste in the screen capture I just took using the PrintScreen key (In some cases you might be able to use clipboard instead of Paint, but it is much more limiting, I find.).

It registered easily though the 'Enter Activation Code' was not removed from the scroll down menu under 'Help' after registration. However the 'Unregistered Version' was removed from the title bar - and changed to 'Auto Screenshot Maker 3.0' after registration. I configured this software to set the hotkeys and capture destination folder before testing and using. Then proceeded to test it for single capture of 'Selection' and save to file in folder of my choice. Also tested it for auto capture of 'Active Window' every 10 seconds to folder of my choice.

Result of test: This is EXCELLENT. It allows me to choose what program to open the saved single capture image. For me I chose ACDSEE-Quick-View. But the application could easily have been any other such as MsPaint or Microsoft Photo Editor or Phoxo or PhotoFiltre.

The auto save function at set intervals is good. It will have useful applications. You can choose to capture the active window or entire screen. You can click on 'Capture' in 'Selection' mode as described by another comment contributor. However, you can do the following when you are already in the screen that you wish to capture a region or part of: Press the hotkey combination for Selection capture. In my case, it is Ctrl-PrtScrn. Then simply left click your mouse on the top left corner of the region that you like to capture and pull to bottom right hand corner of the rectangle of the region.

Release the mouse. The region or 'Selection' is captured to your chosen folder. In my case, I chose JPEG format instead of BMP or PNG. You can specify the prefix of the file name for captured image which are numbered sequentially by the program. Please note that for auto-capture at timed intervals, the word 'auto' is added to whatever prefix you have specified. You can see the captured imaged by pressing your chosen hotkey e,g, 'Alt-O' combination. Then it will open in your chosen application - in my case ACDSEE-Quick-View.

The output quality of the auto-save function is good. I chose 10 seconds interval but you can insert much longer, say for example, every 1000 seconds.

For those facing activation problems, remember to exit the software and don't forget to exit the one in your tray (bottom right hand corner of monitor near the clock). Then when you next open the program, it will be registered. I will keep this AutoScreenshot Maker Version 3.0. But for me, Snag-It which I have been using for many years, remains King of screen capture - Snag-It has video capture too and a powerful Snag-It Studio image editor.

( I do not have Camtasia ) By the way, please continue to offer screenshot capture software in GOTD. I missed out on Bandicam GOTD offer in Apr or May 2011 - forgot to download it. Thanks to Auto Screenshot Maker Soft and GOTD.

(no big deal, just odd, & AFAICT only contains the output path locations.) hotkey (definitions) do not display on the Actions menu nor on any mouseover (would be nice if they did) some sort of indicator, visual & or audible would be nice when it takes a shot (in particular with timed shots) single capture is very limited in what it can do the only 'novelty' i see to this program, is it's timed captures, though i'm just not sure what purpose it would serve? If you type or paste a path into a capture Path dialog, & if you include the trailing '/' then your input is not accepted. By default, the path does show a trailing /, but when you enter one, you're thwarted. C: OUT works, where C: OUT does not!

No way to set output file 'quality' (or any settings other then the choice in file types; JPEG, BMP, or PNG) as a 'general purpose' screenshot capture program, it falls far short compared to most other screenshot programs. As far as a timed capture program, i'm not sure what else is out there? Easy to use, does what it says, just don't know what kind of value, or for who it may be of value, of the timed shot feature? However, I didn't see any other notable features, and it doesn't appear to support the rounded window corners of Vista+, the ability to clear the Aero background, or capture the Aero shadow of the base window (except via capturing a larger area than the window). Those are very basic features which I would expect, that's saying nothing about much more sophisticated features. I use to capture all of my activity. It has endless activity-tracking and viewing features, but documentation is scattered and incomplete.

I have it set to capture at 2-second intervals, discarding duplicates. You have lots of options about what is captured and how it's saved.

I like NTWind for general captures, a new version with more abilities will be out soon. MicroInvention CrossGL is now free and is great for annotation, I haven't tested its capture abilities on Win7. The free FastStone is excellent for annotation, their commercial capture tool is also supposed to be pretty good. GOTD could easily reduce vote manipulation via requiring users to log on like any decent forum.

Users would register via a valid email address, GOTD could delete inactive accounts after 60 days. But the moderators edit and delete any posts which I make about such things. It would also help if users actually voted, almost no one does. And then there are all of the endless users who want everyone to read their comments while ignoring everyone else's. Internally it has registered - but the program will still display 'Unregistered' until you restart the program. Or when running Setup.exe - on the final screen when it asks if you want to Launch the program when setup has completed - unselect the check box. Or just restart windows - that will fix it also.

That'a a bummer cause I need selected area to work. As someone else mentioned above it has a good start but needs some tweaks to be really good. Not much use to me just as a full screen capture. I will keep it through the gaotd and see if anyone has a similar problem and found a solution. Seems to install and activate fine however not sure about activation.
